All the Italian Science on the ISS

February 6th 2017 . With the fundamental contribute given by Italy to the realization of the International Space Station (ISS), the Italian Space Agency (ASI) has earned the access to a part of the resources on the ISS for the execution of the scientific investigations. In this context, since 2001 ASI has developed and operated more than 30 payloads and sponsored more than 70 experiments, generating  a huge number of scientific data, publications and congress papers.

With the aim to present the research results in a structured way, ASI promoted, with the industrial support of Kayser Italia, the creation of the ISPARC database (ISS Publication Archive) to collect all the scientific publications on the Human Spaceflight  programs coordinated and funded by ASI.

The access to ISPARC is now public. Using the navigation tools on the web site, anyone can have information on payloads, investigations, research categories, publications, and events. Access to the publication contents remain as defined by the authors.

More functions are available for the registered members (report download, submission of new publications, custom view of the upcoming events for the dissemination of results).

In this way ASI promotes the dissemination of the knowledge produced by the research on the ISS to the general public, as well as to improve  synergies and collaboration between research groups in scientific areas of common interest.




VITA mission: Four italian experiments under test

Livorno, January 12th 2017, “ICARO” User Support Operations Centre, Kayser Italia, Livorno (Italy) – In the next weeks, the Kayser Italia laboratories will host the Experiment Simulation Test (EST), an important milestone toward the Vitality, Innovation, Technology and Ability (VITA) space mission of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), that will see four italian cell biology experiments on board the International Space Station (ISS) with the support of the astronaut Paolo Nespoli of European Space Agency (ESA). During the several weeks of the test, the teams led by S. Fulle (Università di Chieti, Myogravity experiment), M. Maccarrone (Campus Biomedico Roma, SERiSM experiment), G. Ciofani (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia Pontedera, NANOROS experiment), M. Lulli (Università di Firenze, CORM experiment) will recapitulates the experiments  planned during the space mission. 

Biological samples will be integrated in the Experiment Units and Containers designed and developed by Kayser Italia, kept at a transport temperature simulating the flight to the Space Station, installed in the ESA Kubik incubator and kept running for several days as requested by the scientific protocol. When the experiments will complete their timeline, they will be then kept at very low storage temperatures, simulating the stowage on board ISS before their return on Earth. Finally the experiments will be transported at controlled temperature at the investigators laboratory for the samples analysis.

The EST will prove the correctness of the experiment planning and prepare the teams to potential critical situations. Both in the EST and in the real mission, the scientific teams will be supported by the Kayser Italia Life Science team lead by Marco Vukich. All the experiments are expected to be flown on the International Space Station on June 2017.



VITA: the new mission starts

November, 24th 2016 – ASI headquarter, Rome – The third mission of the Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli has an official name: VITA. The mission and the 13 Italian investigations that today have been presented to Paolo Nespoli and to the press will fly soon to the International Space Station. Kayser Italia is going to replicate the success given in the support to the mission of Samantha Cristoforetti. Through the plurennial contract with ASI for the support to the utilization of the ISS, Kayser Italia is supporting the investigators in the development of the experiments and is ready for the in orbit operations through its USOC, the unique Italian Payload Operation Control Centre located in Livorno, Italy. During the presentation, Paolo Nespoli presented how his life will be organized in space, using the tools provided by Kayser Italia that are used at the USOC to monitor and support the missions.

The italian experiments that Paolo Nespoli will work with are in the biology and technological fields. Thanks to its leadership in the development of space hardware for microgravity research, Kayser Italia is also the main manufacturer of the payloads for most of the scientific investigations. Beyond the scientific goals, the mission has a particular care to the students and the outreaching activities: Kayser Italia is developing the equipment needed by the “Multi-trop” experiment designed by the Liceo Scientifico “Silvestri” (Naples) and the Università degli Studi Di Napoli Federico II that won the dedicated ASI “YiSS” educational call. Moreover many schools in Italy and abroad will have the opportunity to talk live with Paolo Nespoli thanks to the radio school contacts organized by ARISS, the “Amateur Radio on the International Space Station”, for which the HAMVIDEO video transmitter on board the ISS has been developed by Kayser Italia. 



"MULTITROP" won the contest "YiSS"

The collaboration between the Department of Agriculture University of Naples "Federico II" and the High School "Filippo Silvestri Portici" has excelled on the 13 University-School team that participated in the "Yiss" competition organized by the Italian Space Agency ( combined with the upcoming mission of astronaut Paolo Nespoli on the International Space Station (ISS).

The DALiss group was awarded the win with the experiment "MULTITROP" conceived by three students of the Department of Agriculture and nine students of the High School in Naples.

The experiment will reach the ISS within the BIOKON container, developed by Kayser Italia  ( during the mission "Expedition 52/53" , which will be recreated a small workshop for  performing experiments in microgravity and specifically on the three tropisms (gravitropism, idrotropism and chemiotropism) that determine the growth of the roots.

The seeds of the plants will be placed inside the bioreactor YING-B2, also developed by Kayser Italia. 

The bioreactor will house the seeds into two areas containing several elements: a field containing  water substrate while in the other there will be a rich nutrient solution to understand what tropism will get better results in orbit. To return to earth samples, once undergone screening and analysis, will help us to figure out which of the three stimuli has affected the growth of roots.
