Another experiment for the Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano’s mission “Beyond” has been launched to the International Space Station on board the Cygnus NG-12 cargo spacecraft: it is named LIDAL “Light Ions Detector for ALtea” and has been developed by Kayser Italia in collaboration with the team of Prof. Livio Narici (Principal Investigator – PI) of the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy). The experiment aims to widening the spectrum characterization (particles speed and kinetic energy) of the cosmic radiation, being able to process both the heavy and the light ions. The measured data of the incident radiation inside the International Space Station (ISS) will be downloaded in real-time to the User Support Operation Center in Italy for data processing. LIDAL will then became the first “radiation-risk meter” operating in real-time on the ISS.
