ESA experiment SPHEROIDS launched with SpaceX-8

 

April 8th, 2016 - The ESA experiment SPHEROIDS has been launched with SpaceX-8 rocket at 20:43 UTC on April, 8th, from the NASA Kennedy Space Center (Florida) and it is on its way to the ISS, where the experiment will be carried out. The SPHEROIDS experiment aims at investigating the effects of weightlessness on tube formation, differentiation and the mechanisms of apoptosis in human endothelial cells. The experiment's Principal Investigator is Professor Daniela Grimm of the University of Aarhus, Denmark. The industrial team includes Kayser Italia and the Swiss based company RUAG aerospace. The experiment, to be performed inside the KUBIK incubator facility on board the International Space Station, needs quite large volumes for the culture chamber and chemical reservoirs. Because of that, Kayser Italia developed an experiment container with almost 1 liter of internal available volume and a custom interface plate for the KUBIK.

 


 

ISS Payload Design & Operation Safety course

 

5-8 April, 2016 – KAYSER Italia – Livorno, Italy

Kayser Italia will host the "International Space Station Payload Design & Operation Safety" training course in Livorno (Italy), on 5-8 April 2016. The course is designed to provide the participant with an understanding of safety requirements, procedures and processes that are used for design and operations of payloads for the International Space Station. Pavia, March 5, 2016 - The "Centre for Health Technologies" of Pavia has been inaugurated with an exceptional godmother: the ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti. The event was held in the beautiful main building of the University of Pavia. The great “Sala del 400” was not enough to accommodate all the public that had to be hosted in the adjoining room in videoconference. The event was opened by the Rector Fabio Rugge followed by the presentation of the objectives and programs of the new centre by professors Riccardo Bellazzi, Carlomaurizio Montecucco and Livia Visai.

This was followed by the presentations of the guests Gabriele Mascetti, head of the Unit for the Human Flight of the Italian Space Agency and Fabrizio Carrai, the manager of the User Support Operations Centre (USOC) of Kayser Italia. The centre, unique in Italy, supported all the Italian experiments done by Samantha Cristoforetti during her "Futura" mission.

Samantha Cristoforetti was greeted with a thunderous applause. Then she told about her 200 days spent aboard the space station also showing spectacular images. Many connections between the presentations. Professor Visai was the scientific coordinator of the NATO experiment on the developing of nanoparticles as a countermeasure to osteoporosis induced by microgravity. The experiment was funded by the Italian Space and was created and controlled by Kayser Italia, Livorno (in the picture Samantha Cristoforetti with one of the micro-biological labs developed in Livorno). During the course of all the operations required by the experiment, Samantha Cristoforetti was followed in real time by the USOC in Livorno, the only center in Italy for the support of operations on board the ISS.

The USOC, the control center of the experiments, did not finish its work. In the recent months, the first Italian print of 3D object in space has been followed from the Kayser Italia centre that  for the occasion hosted the specialists of the POP3D project.

The mission of the USOC is to support research groups and industries that want to do scientific investigations or technologic demonstration on board the ISS, both in the engineering developments and with on-orbit operations, with the final goal to guarantee the mission success.

Endothelial Cells Experiment (ENDO)

 

On September 14th 2015, in the Principal Investigator laboratory in Pisa, the 24 experiment containers carrying the ENDO samples returning from the International Space Station (ISS), were opened and the samples collected.  After microscopy inspection, all samples looked healthy and suitable for the proposed laboratory analyses. 

The Kayser Italia Experiment Units (EU), developed under an European Space Agency (ESA) contract, were launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome on September 2nd inside the Soyuz 44S rocket. Once installed in the KUBIK facility on board the ISS, the EU were kept at a constant temperature of 37°C. At the end of the experiment they were kept at low temperature until return to ground with Soyuz 42S.

Aim of this project, whose Principal Investigator is Debora Angeloni (S.S. Sant’Anna di Pisa), is to understand the reaction of cultured endothelial cells (HMEC-1 cell line) – a reductionist representation of human endothelium – to spaceflights.   The results of the experiment could contribute to the creation of prevention and rehabilitation protocols as countermeasures to cardiovascular problems experimented by astronauts returning from space missions and, in general, by common persons suffering from inflammatory, degenerative and cardiovascular pathologies.
