IMMUNO samples return with 34S

 

Baikonur, 10 September 2013 - The samples of the IMMUNO experiment have been successfully transported to ground by the members of the ISS Expedition 36 flying back home with the Russian  Soyuz TMA-08M capsule. The samples have been transported using a Kayser Italia “mini-ECCO” thermo-insulated transport container, prepared on board by the Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano. Thanks to the developed technology, the transport container has been able to keep the scientific material down to -29 °C for all the duration of the flight and of the transport to the research center (about 2 days) with no need of any external power.

The Russian Space Agency explicitly requested the use of the mini-ECCO container after its successful use in two past ESA experiments.

The high thermal performance of the ECCO transport containers family are effectively supporting the transfer of biological samples to and from the International Space Station. That allows the Scientists to have back their biological material after its permanence in space, without requiring demanding active thermal controls.

The IMMUNO experiment aims to study the stress and the immune responses during the challenging life of the astronauts in space and wants to lead to the development of solutions to support future long duration space missions.

ODET Open Review Meeting

 

Livorno, 27-28 August 2013 - Top level scientists  from the Canadian National Research Council, the Universities of Hull and Manchester (GB), Laval (CAN), Padova (IT), Bielefeld (D) and micro and opto-fluidic companies representative (ChipShop (D), Lionix (NL), Weidmann (CH/USA), IMEC (B)) gathered together at Kayser Italia to discuss on the state-of-the-art on integrated optical detection system in microfluidics.

Shrinking and controlling functionalities such as fluidics, biochemical assays and optical detection on a single chip is a leading concept for the development of autonomous devices for space applications such as exploration missions, astronaut health and spacecraft monitoring. 

The meeting was held in the frame of the ODET program (Optical DETection in microfluidics) funded by the European Space Agency and lead by Kayser Italia with the partnership of Politecnico di Milano. 

 


HAMVIDEO launched!

 

Tanegashima space center (Japan), 3 August 2013, at 7:48:46 PM GMT the HAMVIDEO payload has been launched on board the Japanese HTV-4 launcher, carrying supplies and scientific experiments to the ISS.

The HAMVIDEO audio/video transmitter will make possible viewing the astronauts and their ISS living habitat to ground stations operated by radio amateurs, providing a one way audio/video link from the ISS to the ground, which can be received on earth with simple low cost receivers. The payload will operate in the European Columbus module, power supplied by the on-board KuPS Portable Power Supply (developed by Kayser Italia) and will receive audio and video from an existing ISS camcorder. 

HAMVIDEO has been developed by KAYSER ITALIA in collaboration with AMSAT ITALIA under ESA contract.

 


 

RIBES on Bion-M1 spacecraft in orbit

 

Baikonur (Kazakhstan), 19-April-2013, at 10:00 GMT the KAYSER ITALIA RIBES precursor payload was successfully launched on board the BION-M1 capsule through the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle from the Baikonur cosmodrome.

The RIBES precursor payload, made of a single BIOKON, accommodates two different Italian experiments: FOAM2, an experiment lead by Prof. Loredana Santo (Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy) on shape memory epoxy foams to evaluate the feasibility of their use for building multi-functional composite structures. The experiment performs the actuation of simple devices in micro-gravity conditions, where three different configurations (loaded and unloaded compression, bending) are chosen during the memory step of the foams so as to produce their recovery on board; DIASPACE2, an experiment lead by Dr. Antonio De Sio (Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Firenze, Italy) is an experiment using polycrystalline diamond films as dosimeters for space applications.

The RIBES precursor payload is completely autonomous from the BION-M1 spacecraft, and equipped with a battery pack to provide the necessary power to execute the experiment (i.e. heating of the foam, se
nsors and image data acquisition). The Bion-M spacecraft is designed for orbital flight in basic and applied research in space biology, physiology and biotechnology with the return of the results of experiments on Earth after 30 days in orbit.

The RIBES precursor payload was launched in the framework of an industrial Italy-Russia agreement aimed to increase the flight opportunities for life and physical sciences experiments in microgravity.
