Kayser Italia contributes to the PLATO mission of ESA

October 4th ,2018. The construction of ESA's Plato mission to find and study planets beyond our Solar System will be led by Germany’s OHB System AG as prime contractor, marking the start of the full industrial phase of the project. Plato, the PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars mission, will be launched in 2026 to find and study extrasolar planetary systems, with a special emphasis on rocky planets around Sun-like stars and their habitable zone – the distance from a star where liquid water can exist on a planet’s surface.

The spacecraft will be built and assembled by OHB together with Thales Alenia Space (France and the UK) and RUAG Space Switzerland; many ESA member States will also be involved in the construction of this European planet hunter.

The eight-mechanical units of the 26 Plato telescopes, which were designed in the laboratories of the INAF, thanks to the support of the ASI, and the University of Bern are built by a RTI formed by Leonardo srl, Thales Alenia Space Turin and Medialario . The on-board computer, another part of the payload, of Italian responsibility, designed in Inaf, is developed by Kayser Italia ».

ACLS: the new European life support system ready for launch to the ISS

ACLS launched!

Kayser Italia announces that the ACLS facility is now awaiting its mission to the ISS. The launch occurred on 22 September 2018 on board of HTV7 Pressurized Logistics Carrier from Tanegashima Space Center, Japan. ACLS is a life support system technology demonstrator, developed since 2011 by Airbus for ESA.

ACLS system development and qualification phase of ACLS was completed in February 2018. After shipment to Japan, a check-out was performed together with launch readiness activities. In April finally ACLS was installed in the HTV7 Pressurized Logistics Carrier and is now awaiting its mission to the ISS. HTV is the only remaining carrier with a hatch large enough to allow transferring the facility into the space station. German astronaut Alexander Gerst shall perform the installation and outfitting activities in early November. The commissioning phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year in order to demonstrate nominal operations in 2019.

"Generating Value to Society from Research in Space": this is the title of the ESA Users Workshop that opened one of the most important conference on the research and developments on board the International Space Station. Alessandro Donati, General Manager at Kayser Italia Srl, participated at the workshop chaired by Bernhard Hufenbach, the Strategy and Innovation Team leader for the European Space Agency (ESA) presenting the Bioreactor Express program. The workshop was scheduled on Monday, July 23 2018.

Small space re-entry system development Program recently launched

June 28th, 2018. IPERDRONE is the name of the Program recently funded by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) aimed at designing and developing a small space re-entry system, which is able to perform in-orbit operations on the International Space Station (ISS), re-enter the atmosphere and safely land on Earth bringing back unaltered ISS scientific payloads/experiments.

The Program team is led by CIRA (Centro Italiano di Ricerche Aerospaziali) acting as the PRIME contractor, Tyvak International, the European office of Terran Orbital Corporation operating in Italy in the small satellites and mission development and launch services provision, and Kayser Italia, Italian leader in the development and qualification of systems to be used in the frame of scientific and technological research onboard space platforms, including the International Space Station.

IPERDRONE Program will consist of a series of missions characterized by incremental objectives, aiming at qualifying a new type of mission and related technologies: the program targets the realization of an autonomous space drone which will be located on the International Space Station and sent on different missions supporting the station crew as well as ISS payload re-entry, thus providing the scientific community with outcomes of experiments, ready to be validated on ground.

The objective of the first mission, DAVID, is to demonstrate the system's capabilities, mainly ISS inspection and interaction with the station crew. The launch is expected in Q4 2019, coinciding with the stay of Italian Astronaut Luca Parmitano on the ISS.
